Spoiler alert: don’t wait for the experts to make AI safe for our children. Parenting isn’t their job.
It’s natural and sensible to want hard evidence before making up our minds. React too fast and we might jump the gun. Too slow, and we could be left exposed. They’re the usual rules.
But AI is developing faster than the rules of engagement can be written. Meanwhile, our children are already turning to it, and it’s understandable for parents to feel left behind.
So what should parents do?
I think it’s about staying curious, staying involved and recognising that sometimes parenting has to happen before the evidence is complete.
Waiting and hoping for politicians and engineers to make AI safer might come back to bite us, as social media has.
